Course objectives:
|
The course focuses on the architectural development from prehistory to the end of Roman antiquity while extending to the later eras of the Byzantine and Illamic world in Europe and partially also in the Middle East. The lectures are devoted to elementary questions regarding architectural development in the stated period in the Middle East (Turkey, Iraq, the Arabian peninsula), North Africa (Egypt) and Europe. Prehistory and ancient cultures (structuring prehistory and antiquity - space-time relations, construction activities in paleolie and mesolite, construction activities in neolite and later prehistoric epochs in Europe, the development of younger periods in Mesopotamia and Egypt). Antiquity (pre-Greek era: the Cycladic culture, the Minoan culture, the Trojan cultural sphere, the Helladic culture, Greek antiquity: construction materials and constructions, construction orders, construction types, dwellings, Roman antiquity: construction materials and constructions, construction orders, construction types, dwellings). Byzantine and Roman architecture (Byzantine architecture and its expansion in Europe; Islamic architecture and its development). The goal is to acquaint the audience with the complete range of the topic in its basic characteristics. Emphasis is put mostly on ancient architecture which remains crucial for comprehending the medieval development of buildings in Western and Central Europe.
