Course objectives:

The thesis work should prove the student?s independent ability of investigating and developing an issue within the studied field and with respect to his/her future professional or study interests. The emphasis lies in a critical choice of method, creating a relevant theoretical frame of reference, and an extensive analysis of the theoretical and empirical material, where the author should make a contribution to the chosen subject or problem area.

Requirements on student

Requirement for obtaining the course credit is active participation in consultations for working out the thesis and providing the thesis to its supervisor in required by him level of elaboration.

Content
|
A completion of the Bachelor Thesis is the necessary requirement for taking the State Bachelor Exam. The student has the topic of the Bachelor Thesis and the corresponding work plan approved by his/her own supervisor at the end of the 5th semester or in the beginning of the 6th semester. The student receives beginning instructions to start his/her work on the thesis, including e.g. understanding the research work. During the first part of the work, the student will familiarize himself/herself with the relevant literature and will choose the appropriate methods. Then, the student will report these choices to the supervisor. The second half of the work is reserved for making the research work, consultation with the supervisor, writing the thesis and finalising the work. A rule of thumb for the extent of the Bachelor thesis is 30 - 40 pages

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
The course is offered only to the students of the study field Civil Engineering. Academic writing skills, a good knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods and basic knowledge of thesis lay-out style are assumed. In case of insufficient background knowledge, the supervisor will suggest reading material to make up for it. |

- read other studies and their news releases and order studies, and
- write a clear report on the findings according to reporting guidelines, and
- present the empirical material in a clear and comprehensive way, and
- defend the thesis. |
