Course objectives:

The main aim of the defence of Diploma Thesis is to prove students'ability of self-employed creative and scientific work within the studied field and with respect to his/her future professional or study interests. The emphasis lies in a critical choice of method, creating a relevant theoretical frame of reference, and an extensive analysis of the theoretical and empirical material, where the author should make a contribution to the chosen subject or problem area. In addition, development of presentation and argumentation skills is aimed.

Requirements on student
|
The condition for granting the credit are
- regular consultations with the thesis supervisor, usually at least every 2 weeks, during which the student presents the results of his / her work and progress in the solution of the given topic;
- elaboration of qualification work in specified scope and quality;
- presentation of student's results at Geoseminar organized by the department.

Content
|
A completion of the Diploma Thesis is the necessary requirement for taking the State Exam in the study fields Geomatics, Land-use Planning and Municipal Engineering. The student has the topic of the Diploma Thesis and the corresponding work plan approved by his/her own supervisor. The student receives beginning instructions to start his/her work on the thesis. During the first part of the work, the student will familiarize himself/herself with the relevant literature and will choose the appropriate methods. Then, the student will report these choices to the supervisor, and also to other students at seminars. The second half of the work is reserved for making the research work, consultation with the instructor, writing the thesis and finalising the work. A rule of thumb for the extent of the Diploma Thesis is 40-60 pages.
The Diploma Thesis defence could be passed only if the student fulfilled all conditions given by Study and Examining plan of the University of West Bohemia.

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
The course is offered to the students of the study fields Geomatics and Land-use Planning. Academic writing skills and a good knowledge of theoretical and application courses in the field are assumed. The advantage is the basic knowledge of typography. |
