Course objectives:
|
The course is dedicated to students enrolled in helthcare study programme. Students are brought up to the B1 (grammar)/B2 (vocabulary) levels according to the Common European Framework for Languages. Students are able to utilize their knowledge in communication in professional settings. Special attention is paid to the expansion of vocabulary from health care disciplines.

Requirements on student
|
1) timely completion of all assigned tasks (including the writing assignment discussing a selected topic);
2) completion of a final credit test with at least 75% of correct answers. Students have one regular and two additional test attempts in a given academic year;

Students can use basic vocabulary concerning the content of study and their future profession. |
Students correctly use present and past continuous and simple tenses, present and past perfect. |
Students can list health-care disciplines, professionals and hospital departments. |
Students can describe parts of the human body, its internal organs and functions. |
Students form questions using all types of verbs. |
Students correctly use prepositions when describing places and procedures. |
Students can express future using "will", "going to" and the present continuous tense. |
Students can use zero and first conditionals correctly. |
Skills - skills resulting from the course: |
Students can simply describe their future working environment: a hospital or any other type of a health care facility. |
Students are able to work with patients´ medical records and fill in their cards. |
Students are able to describe the human body and its parts, most common illnesses, various examination methods and life-threatening conditions. |
They can apply and explain the principles of first aid. |
They can describe individual hospital wards and can provide patients with correct information; navigate throughout the hospital. |
Students are able to obtain patients´ personal details and their present and former symptoms; provide important information and make appointments over the phone. |
Students can list and characterize common symptoms and types of pain. |
Students are able to select appropriate grammar means according to the communicative situation. |
Students chan specify pre and post operative care, the operating theatre. |
Students are able to write and read elementary texts dealing with health care issues; are able to use the data available from the patient history card in English. |
