Course objectives:
|
The course of academic Czech is intended for foreign students (non-native speakers) of study programmes of UWB taught in Czech who have reached CEFR Level B1+. Students learn not only grammar and vocabulary, but get also acquainted with sociocultural background needed for studying at a Czech university. The course prepares to reach CEFR Level B2.
The UJP/CAU3 course loosely follows the UJP/CAU2 course.

Requirements on student
|
Credit requirements:
1. Attendance is compulsory (2 possible absences).
2. Students have to take a midterm test.
3. Students have to pass a final test (min. 75 %).
4. Students have to submit a portfolio of tasks.
5. Students have to give a presentation (8-10 min).
Exam requirements:
The exam is oral and consists of two parts - a monologue on selected topic and a dialogue with the teacher based on the portfolio. The final result is based on the assessment of both parts. The topics are based on the content of the seminars.

Introductory class. Presentation of the course, familiarization with the curriculum and requirements for completing the course. Scientific style - revision and summarizing previous knowledge.
Week 2
Sources of information, types of scientific style, used language.
Week 3
Annotation, abstract, summary, keywords.
Week 4
The structure of the scientific paper. Quotations and paraphrases.
Week 5
Technical description. Passive voice - reflexive.
Week 6
Passive voice - descriptive.
Week 7
Midterm test.
Week 8
Word formation with suffixes - verbal nouns.
Week 9
Word formation with suffixes - verbal adjectives.
Week 10
Secondary prepositions. Clause transformations.
Week 11
Formal correspondence - complaint letter.
Week 12
Course revision. Final test.
Week 13
Test correction. Evaluation.

- list the principles of making and delivering a presentation, point out the common mistakes |
- distinguish forms of relative pronouns |
- list basic vocabulary related to use of computer in daily life |
- name the basic features and linguistic means of scientific style |
- distinguish words of foreign origin |
- distinguish between prepositions expressing cause and consequence |
- distinguish between standard and sub-standard linguistic means |
- enumerate different ways and strategies of taking efficient notes during lectures |
- distinguish (written) lecture and essay |
Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
- make and deliver a presentation on a familiar topic |
- properly use the forms of relative pronouns |
- properly define objects, people, phenomena and activities |
- describe activities performed when working on computer, explain work procedure |
- analyze the words of foreign origin both in written and spoken language |
- analyze a text from the point of view of linguistic means used and assign it to the scientific or administrative style |
- analyze the prepositions expressing cause and consequence both in written and spoken text |
- capture the main ideas and make notes of a lecture |
