Course objectives:

The aim of the course (conducted in English) is to develop intercultural competencies and language skills at the level B1/B2 of the CEF. The course is intended mainly for foreign students, where it is necessary to take into account the different levels of language competences. Interest in social and cultural issues and a willingness to discuss are expected, as well as potential interest in participating in joint activities of local student and non-student groups related to the issue of intercultural coexistence.

Content
|
Week 1 Introduction to the course; Individual international experience. Possibilities for intercultural contacts at the University of West Bohemia (esp. International Students' Club [ISC] - buddies).
Week 2 Language of discussion. Expressing one's opinion. Rules for intercultural communication.
Week 3 Culture. Defining the word "culture". What is culture for you. Types of cultures.
Week 4 Defining the word "multicultural". Multicultural aspects.
Week 5 Communicating across cultures. Cultural influences.
Week 6 Gender and communication. What is "masculine" and "feminine".
Week 7 Stereotyping and generalisation. Czech culture stereotypes.
Week 8 Body language. Communication styles. Communication and situational appropriateness.
Week 9 Exploring language. Definitions for prejudice, discrimination, racism, sexism, and homophobia
Week 10 Politeness in intercultural communication. Sexism in English and Czech. Political correctness. Discussing controversial issues.
Week 11 Students' presentations.
Week 12 Students' presentations.
Week 13 Consolidation and evaluation.
