This course is intended for students of our Masters programme in International Relations. It aims to provide insight into the complex problems of international and regional security in the 20th and 21st century from both theoretical and empirical point of view. It focuses on the main issues related to contemporary security - evolution of security as a concept and its relation to the transformation of the international system, typologies and sectors in security analysis with a special focus on military, human and energy security; on the possibility of maintaining peace in the international system and in individual regions; on research of conflicts, their course and causes, as well as on the available tools and strategies of conflict prevention and resolution; on the roles various actors (states, international institutions, non-governmental organizations) play in maintaining peace and security and in conflict resolution, as well as on questions related to the United Nations and the practical operation of contemporary systems of collective security and collective conflict management. The course will also deal with the problem of basic concepts and theories related to security, and outline the main trends present in international and regional security. After the end of the Cold war, there have been many discussions of the rising importance of regional security and on the so-called "regional turn" in security and peace studies. The course will therefore aim to utilize the regional level of analysis, focusing the attention of students on the role of regional powers and regional organizations in conflict resolution and international security.
