The aim of this course is to introduce the students to the role of Great Britain in the international system. Emphasis will be placed on the transformation of the United Kingdom position of power since the Glorious Revolution until today. After passing this course, the students should be able to evaluate critically the role of Britain as a former global hegemon and compare the positive and negative aspects of British imperial policy. The lectures will analyze the key position of Great Britain as a European and global military and naval actor, and the causes of its political, economic and financial rise (and subsequent fall). The role of British colonial policy in extra-European territories and its impact on the native population will not be omitted either. |
