The goal of the lecture is to provide the students an overview of the history of Japan in the years 1868-1945. The main focus will be concentrated of the political and social situation in Japan which enabled creation of a specific totalitarian system, which was in several important factors different from similar regimes in Europe and Asia. The lectures will also be focused on the aggressive steps of Japanese militarism which culminated in the attack against Pearl Harbor in 1941. Students will also be introduced to the question of the picture of these events in the present Japanese historical memory.
