Course objectives:
|
Students will be introduced to the historical development and the nature of state units in Iran since the end of the 4th millennium BCE until the Sassanid Empire. The course is based on written sources and on the results of archaeological research. The course will be also focused on the ethnic structure and its changes through the history, on relationship to the neighboring areas, particularly to the territory of Mesopotamia. Finally, the later contacts with Greece and Rome will be summarized.

Learning outcomes
|
Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students are able to draw up a timeline of important events of the state units on the territory of ancient Iran. They identify particular state units in concrete period and evaluates their historical development, relations with neighboring areas, especially with the region of Mesopotamia, and with areas inhabited by Greeks and with Rome in later periods. They will also be able to characterize the differences in their material culture, social organization and cultic sphere. |
