Course objectives:
|
This course is intended for postgraduates/Masters students. The aim of the course is to make sense of sport, games and sport activities in intercultural perspective. Sport and games will be corelate with the other attributes of specific culture. In connection with sport and games other issues (as a racism, etnicity, gender, socialization etc.) will be discuss. Important part of the course is also ethnography of sport and games activities.

Content
|
Studies of sport in the anthropological framework and history of the discourse. Cultural approach to the research of sport. Definition of basic terminology.
Theoretical and methodological background of the anthropology of sport.
History of sport. Traditional vs. modern sport.
Sport, leisure and free-time activities in various cultures. Ethnographic examples and their interpretation.
Movie projection: Trobriand Cricket (Leach, 1976). Discussion and analysis of the movie.
Modern sport - general characteristics. Origin of the concept.
Selected topics, related to the modern sport - nationalism and sport, racism and sport.
Selected topics, related to the modern sport - sport and violence, sport and gender.
Selected topics, related to the modern sport - sport and socialization; sport and development.
