Classification of materials for cutting tools according to their designation, properties and use. Production of materials for cutting tools; mechanical and heat treatment. Surface treatment and processes. Testing of wear-resistant thin films. Special structural materials and their properties in machining. Relationship between mechanical, chemical and physical properties of materials and machinability. Progressive cutting materials, their applications and limitations.
