Course objectives:
|
The aim of this course is to extend knowledge of basic concepts, theories and methods of social and cultural anthropology and the ability of students to apply them in the context of the helping professions, especially social work. The course draws mainly from the concepts of culture and cultural relativism, especially with regard to the cultural and social differentiation of contemporary modern societies. The course will focus on minorities (both national minorities as well as marginalized populations in a wider sense), and on the issue of barriers set by the dominant culture for marginalized people. The course will further introduce the basic assumptions of multicultural theory and discuss their applicability in the context of social work and social integration in the Czech Republic.
