Course objectives:
|
The aim of this course is to introduce the students the causes of establishment of the Soviet bloc in the region of Central and Southeastern Europe, with the development of particular satellites of the USSR and with the final collapse of the local communist regimes. Selected problems will be discussed more thoroughly during seminars, with the active participation of students, who are supposed to present their papers about chosen topic.

|
1. Origins of the Soviet bloc - disputes among the Great Powers, Soviet foreign policy in the end of the World War II, different starting positions of the countries fighting against Axis and of the German allies in the region 2. Sovietization of Central Europe and Stalinist regimes in Poland and Hungary 3. Sovietization of Southeastern Europe and Stalinist regimes in Romania and Bulgaria 4. Establishment of communist regimes in Yugoslavia and Albania and first years of their existence, Soviet-Yugoslav split 5. Post-Stalinist liberalization in Central Europe - liberal period of Gomulka's Poland, Hungarian uprising 1956 in a wider context 6. De-Stalinization of the Balkans - "Romanian way to socialism", Bulgaria as the most loyal satellite 7. Specifics of the development in Tito's Yugoslavia and Hoxha's Albania till the mid-1960s - workers' self-management in Yugoslavia, Albanian "de-Stalinization in the spirit of Stalinism" 8. Normalization in Central Europe - nationalism in Poland, "Goulash Communism" in Hungary 9. Dynastic communism of Nicolae Ceau?escu in Romania, conservation of the regime of Todor Zhivkov in Bulgaria 10. National question in Yugoslavia, Albanian road to international isolation 11. Collapse of the communist regimes in Poland and Hungary 12. Collapse of the communist regimes in Romania and Bulgaria 13. Road to the breakup of Yugoslavia, slow and hesitating reforms in Albania
