Course objectives:
|
Main objective of the course is to make studets familiar with how archaeology contributes to the synthesis of early medieval Europe. Its importace is documented by research themes, such as the ethogenesis/expansion (in the pre-war period) and the state formation processes (more recently) in which archaeology plays significant role (study of urban-, production- and craft developments, everyday life, monasticism, etc.). The course is intended for foreign students (Erasmus program + other mobility programs).

Requirements on student
|
The students are expected to explain the basic trends in the early medieval history of Europe and to be able to describe the contribution of archaeology to the understanding of European society in the second half of 1st millenium AD (economy, settlement, burial practices, production, art, communication, etc.). Current trends and objectives of early medieval archaeology in European countries concerned. Combined exam, presentation, test, project, seminar work.

To summarize the current state of archaeological research of Early Medieval Europe, and to compare its state to that of prehistory and the subsequent High Medieval and Modern periods |
To describe the development of pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art, especially artistic craft (its artefacts) and architecture |
To summarize basic opinions on the Slavic ethnogenesis and expanse |
To outline the development of material culture in the monitored period |

To evaluate the importance of archaeological sites critically in the context of other sources of historical knowledge of the monitored period |
