Course objectives:
|
The course objective is to introduce the students to the current state and prospects of archaeological research of the early Modern Age in the Czech Republic. The lecture provides a definition of this archaeological specialization and the possibilities and links with other historic disciplines (especially social and economic history, historical ethnography, art history). The lectures are aimed at the study of the settlement, landscape and settlement components, burial sites, mining and production areas, trade, areas of conflict. The seminars will focus on gaining knowledge of Early Modern Age artefacts, from the products of potters, glassmakers to the artefacts made of metals and organic materials.

|
Main topics:
1. Introduction to the archaeology of the Early Modern Age (definition, condition, goals and prospects of the discipline). 2. Modern Age landscape and settlement. 3. Rural settlements, homestead, house; agriculture and non-agricultural production. 4. Elite dwellings. 5. Urban environment. 6. Economic activities of cities. 7. Sacral architecture and burial. 8. Mining and processing of raw materials. 9. Communication and trade. 10. Fortification. 11. Archaeology of conflicts of the Early Modern Age (battlefields, field fortifications and other material evidence of war events). 12. Historical archaeology at the intersection of scientific disciplines.
