Course objectives:
|
The course will focus on specific problems of development in selected regions of the Middle East, Africa, and post-Soviet space. Based on an intensive study of various case studies, the students will get knowledge about interlinks between poverty, politics, economics, social and ethnic inequalities, institutional dysfunctions, etc.

Content
|
1) Development Issues in Theory and Practice
In the first cycle of lectures, students will get deeper understanding and knowledge of basic terms and will be able to distinguish and address specific development problems of various areas of the Middle East, Africa, and post-Soviet area.
2) Development Problems of Selected African Regions
In this cycle of lectures, the complex of development problems of selected regions of Africa (Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, Gulf of Guinea countries, Central African Republic, landlocked countries of the West Africa). The emphasis will be put on interlinks between socioeconomic and political impacts and variables in relation to development, conflict potential, and inequalities in society.
3) Development Problems of Selected Middle Eastern Regions
In this cycle of lectures, the complex of development problems of selected regions of the Middle East (Maghreb, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq). The emphasis will be put on interlinks between socioeconomic and political impacts and variables in relation to development, conflict potential, and inequalities in society.
4) Development Problems of Selected post-Soviet Regions
In this cycle of lectures, the complex of development problems of selected regions of the post-Soviet space (Central Asia, Caucasus, Ukraine, selected regions of Russia). The emphasis will be put on interlinks between socioeconomic and political impacts and variables in relation to development, conflict potential, and inequalities in society.

- to evaluate on his/her own the strengths and weaknesses of development cooperation of different donors in the international system
