Course objectives:
|
This course is a continuation of the course Theatre and the Near East 1. It deals with the current situation in the theatrical art, and the crisis of the theatre as an artistic and literary genre in the Near Eastern countries. The main focus will be on the contemporary theatre in Egypt and Syria. Students will be presented with some current problems the theatre is faced with. The course also gives an analysis of various forms of presenting drama and their impact on the popularity of the classical theatre. Some lectures will include drama projections.

|
1. Trends of the current theatre in the Near East.
2. Contemporary comedy and drama in the Near East.
3. The role played by private theatre companies.
4. State-owned theatres under the auspices of the Ministeries of Culture.
5. Crisis of the art of scriptwriting in the modern theatre of the Near East.
6. World-famous classical plays staged in National theatres in Syria and Egypt.
7. Most renowned playwrights in the Near East at the present time.
8. Social and political issues as reflected in drama.
9. Controversial play ?Party in honour of 5th June? and its analysis.
10. Durajd Lahhám and his influence on the Arabic theatre.
11. Adil Imám and an analysis od social and political aspects of his works.
12. The role of the media, especially TV, and their impact on the popularity of drama.
13. Projection of selected plays.

The student will gain general understanding of the current theatre works and the most important theatre personalities in the Near East. He/she will be able to talk about the role of the contemporary theatre in the social life and also discuss the impact of events taking place in the Near East on the modern theatrical works in the region. |
