Course objectives:
|
This course will introduce formation of Jewish identity, own concept of religious law, philosophy and etics. Discussed will be themes of antic and christian Antijudaism, blending of Jewish and Islamic, Christian culture, importance of transfer of scientifical and cultural informations among three monoteistic cultures, importance of Andaluz, of crusaders wars, persecusion of Jews from christian states, their importance in reneisance and humanistic society, contribution of Haskala, the phenomenon of Sionism and rise of Modernity.

Requirements on student
|
Student will be introduced into the history of Jewish nation in Middleages and in Modern age. He should be able to study relevant resources. The course ends by written exam. Students have to pass partial tests during semester before exam.

|
1. Life of Jews in succesor states of Roman empire. Legal position of Jews in newly formating society.
2. Situation in the area of Syropalestina in the era of government of Byzanthian empire and Islamic dynasties.
3. Development of western Europe, long-haul trade and importance of Jews in it.
4. Life in Andaluz, Frank empire, formation of society of middle and eastern Europe, relationship between church and Jewish minority.
5. Importance of Jewish minority in sharing of scientifical informations, philosophy and art.
6. The consequences of persecusion of Jews from Spain, relationship of ecomony of christian states and jewish banking.
7. Askenazy culture, crusaders wars, medieval Antisemitism, Lateran counsil and restrictions.
8. Origin of jewish community in Palestina, pre-sionistic jisuv.
9. Development of jewish culture in eastern Europe, situation in Poland, Russia and on the Balkan.
10. Enlightment, Haskala, asimilation, Hebrew as a language of scholars, Moses Mendelsohn, entering the modernity, emancipation.
11. Modern age Antisemitism, messianic trends, dissapoinment from the concept of Haskala, easteuroean Chasidism, Sionism. Shoa and its reflection, present time.
12. Jews and the state of Israel, importance of diaspora.
13. History of coexistence of Jews and inhabitants of czech countries.

Afters this cours student will know the most important events, places and personalities of medieval and modern age history of Jews. Will put this historical facts into the global context of history of Europe and Middle East. Will evaluate the role and position of jewish community in czech countries. Will know facts about the culture of askenazy and safardian Jews. Will be oriented in modern age history of jewish nation. |
