Course objectives:
|
The course introduces the general understanding of the state in the ancient Near East, its functions, duties of the population, and the relationship between settled and nomadic elements of population. Subsequently, the role of the ruler and royal ideology, the state administration and administration offices, army, law and justice, trade, agriculture, crafts, art and Near Eastern architecture are described. The next section of lectures deals with international relations and diplomacy, royal correspondence, texts with historical background, and wisdom and love literature. Finally, the course introduces the beginnings of scientific disciplines of the ancient the Near East.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Student characterizes the conception of the state in the ancient Near East, he describes its fundamental functions and elements of the population. He compares the role of the ruler and the royal ideology in the particular countries and periods, he outlines the structure and working of administration, economy and armed forces. He evaluates and compares the essential legislative texts and distinguishes and describes most important artistic and architectural monuments of different periods and locations. He outlines the nature of international relations and royal correspondence, interprets important compositions with historical background as well as wisdom and love literature, and summarizes significant discoveries in the field of ancient Near Eastern sciences. |
