Course objectives:
The seminar is intended as integral part of the course Landscape Archaeology which significantly enlarges basic knowledge of this course students and, at the same time, brings some special themes on which current landscape- and non-destructive archaeologies are focused primarily. The biggest attention is given to the discipline of archaeological remote sensing (aerial survey, vertical aerial photos and satellite images, lidar, geophysical measurement) whose current state passed through large-scale technical development changing its range of applications.
Requirements on student
The students are expected to be familiar with basic trends and with some of special themes as they have been reflected in current landscape- and non-invasive archaeology. Students have to be oriented in current developments of these disciplines in both the Czech Republic and in archaeologically advanced European countries. They are expected to be able to critically evaluate potential of methods which have been applied in archaeological study of social dimension of landscape and for the reconstruction of its natural likeness (change and continuity). Also, students have to be able to compare the potential of archaeology with that of other disciplines aimed at the investigation of past landscapes, such as history, historical geography, cartography, ecology. A seminar work on any aspect concerning landscape- and non-destructive archaeology is a principal obligation.
Content
Principal attention is given to the relation between theoretical and empirical aspects of landscape and non-invasive archaeology in the context of archaeological field methods. Stressed is the need for heritage protection for the sake of its preservation - not only due to esthetic value, but also its informative (cognitive) meaning. During the seminar the potential of modern innovative technologies for past landscape studies is discussed. Students talk about their work on their seminar papers based predominately on foreign literature.
