Course objectives:
|
The aim of this course is the introduction of the basic philosophical conceptions of the ancient period. During the lectures students will be introduced to the ontological, epistemological and ethical problems of the studied era. Through their own reading they will become acquainted with the particular aspects of the ancient philosophical thinking. On the basis of seminar paper students will acquaint with particular texts and use them to research specific character of ancient philosophical thinking.

Content
|
The origins of philosophy. Mythos and logos. An investigation into the nature. Ionian and Italian branches of philosophy. Milesians. Pythagoreans, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides and the Eleans. Empedocles and Anaxagoras. The Atomists. The Sophists and Socrates. Plato. Aristotle: logic, first philosophy, physics, ethics, politics. Hellenism: Stoicism, Epicureism, Scepticism. Neoplatonism.

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students will be competent to orientate themselves in the fundamental topics of the ancient philosophy. Thanks to the critical reading of the original sources they will be able to identify partial tendencies established during the history of the western thinking into the respective philosophical systems. This knowledge will provide them with understanding of the whole process of formation of the European philosophical discourse within its vast spectrum of influences, which is necessary for further study of philosophy. |
