Course objectives:
|
The aim is to test students´ ability in creative and research activity within selected field of study, which is consistent with their future professional or research orientation. Emphasis is placed on critical selection of methods, building relevant theoretical background, thorough analysis of theoretical and empirical materials and students´ particular contribution to the area of research. The very important part is presentation skills and ability to defend the results of the research.

Requirements on student
|
PhD thesis defense is similar to oral examination in front of a committee. The examiners evaluate the quality od the thesis, presentation and argumentation, the overall attitude and involvement of students during their preparation. Examiners expect systematic and independent work, meeting particular tasks, ability to critically assess the outcomes, formulation of correct findings, ability to present the thesis orally and in writing according to the standards of the field.

Content
|
The course is designed for students who wish to complete PhD political science degree in the respective academic year. Students prepare their defence on the basis of expert opinions by two opponents. Students must address all comments and provide additional explanation to his thesis. The manner of defence must be consulted with supervisors. The defence generally lasts 30 minutes and consists in the introduction of the thesis, additional questions and evaluation. The defence can be held only if all requirements regulated by the Study and Examination Regulations of The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen are met.
