Course objectives:
|
To equip students with basic knowledge of geoinformation technologies, knowledge of basic geoinformation terms. To direct students to the creation of basic skills when working with a particular geoinformation software application, to work with map portals, to create thematic maps containing economic content, to formulate queries concerning space and its attributes and to create simple map outputs.
|
Requirements on student
|
A report on the topic of geographic information systems - abstract of a professional article (or the use of knowledge from the article as part of the seminar paper below)
Seminar paper - elaboration of 3 thematic maps. Seminar paper can be corrected twice
Meeting the requirements of the knowledge and skills tests at 75%, possibility of repeating the test twice
|
Content
|
Geo-information technologies (GI), geographical information systems (GIS) - means for processing spatial information - introduction/reminder of the principles of working with GIS with emphasis on the use by economists and economic geographers (Google Earth, ArcGIS - especially ArcGIS Pro)
Reminder of cartographic concepts needed when working with GIS.
Data structures for GIS. Raster data and their use. Vector data, basic elements - points, lines, polygons - reminder. Remote sensing.
Geographical data sources for economists and economic geographers
Basic GI operations, geodata obtaining and organization, working in attribute table, connecting secondary data to GIS (ArcGIS Pro)
Demonstration/reminder of editing and creating vector data in ArcGIS Pro.
Reminder of the principles of creating thematic maps (cartogram, cartodiagram, localized diagrams, area anamorphosis, etc.)
Creating map graphics and tabular output in ArcGIS Pro.
Analytical problem solving, work with attribute table and spatial queries. Basic database operations.
Hardware requirements for GI, selected major software products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, QGIS).
Presentation of other GIS options (Umap - creating maps on top of OpenStreetMap base layers - example of Interactive Atlas), ArcGIS Online, ScapeToad - creating base geodata for anamorphic maps (cartograms) modified in ArcGIS Pro.
Practical use of GIS in geographic projects - other demonstrations, examples, geographic projects with socio-economic focus
