Course objectives:
|
The subject of the course are selected topics related to the development of Czech literature of the 19th century. Gradually, the main features of the general and special in this period of Czech literature will be clarified against the background of historical and cultural events of the time. Attention will be paid to the integration of important Russian production into the Czech literary context and vice versa. The phenomena of Pan-Slavism and Slavophilism will be emphasized. Translations of works of Russian literature and their reception in the Czech environment will be discussed. Differences in Czech and Russian culture will be monitored.
International students will gain an overview of the interaction of Russian and Czech literature and of the context of the Czech-Russian literary context.

Content
|
The course deals with selected topics that relate to the development of Czech literature of the 19th century. Gradually, they explained the main features of general and special in this period of Czech literature at the historical background and cultural events of the time. Attention will be paid to the integration of major Russian production in the Czech literary context, and vice versa. They will be accentuated phenomena panslavism and Slavophilism. It will be discussed on translations of Russian literary works and their reception in the Czech environment. They will be observed differences in Czech and Russian culture.
Foreign students get an overview of the interaction of Russian and Czech literature on the links Czech-Russian literary context.
1. The notion of National Revival movement. Assumptions formation, periodization.
2. Pre-romanticism. J. Dobrovský and his journey to Russia. Contribution of Dobrovský to shaping of Ukrainian national identity.
3. Panslavic romanticism. K. J. Erben and Russia. Russian partners of Czech Panslavists. Ideas of
Slavophilism.
4. Czech Romanticism in the European literary context. Specific features of the Czech Romanticism.
5. Reception of A.S.Puškin's creation. Influence of the formation of Russian classics on Czech literature (Pushkin, Lermontov).
6. Realism. Forms of the Czech Realism and its genres.
7. Jan Neruda - a pioneer of critical realism. Almanac "Maj"; Májovci.
8. Alois Jirasek - creator of the historical realist novel.
9. Karel Capek. The activities of the St. Petersburg Society of brothers Čapek.
10. Masaryk's interpretations of the works of Leo Tolstoy. From the Czech correspondence with Tolstoy.
