Introducing to the intellectual development and history of European thinking from its ancient roots to the present, in a cultural, religious and political context. Particular emphasis will be placed on Greek and Roman philosophy, but also on biblical (Jewish) sources that have contributed to the development of philosophy, theology and science in the Christian West. Attention will also be focused on the influences of Islam on the European intellectual world. New impulses will also be reflected in times of humanism, Renaissance and European reform. An important topic will also be the Anglo-Saxon, French and Central European (Czech) Enlightenment, and an overview of the basic philosophical, political or ethical issues of the 19th to the 21st century.
