Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students into the history of European national movements. The main focus will be on their development in the so-called long 19th century, for at that time the influence of the French Revolution in 1789 and the Napoleonic Wars led to the activation and politicization of national movements, and voices calling for the formation of united nation states began to emerge, as was the case in Germany and Italy. In the course of the 19th century the question of nationality became an increasing problem for the multinational Habsburg monarchy and eventually led to its dissolution during the First World War. Due to the ongoing controversy over the interpretation of the term "nationalism", this issue will also be outlined. The question of the "darker" side of nationalism will not be left aside either. Lectures will be based on the latest knowledge of foreign historians.
