Course objectives:

The aim of the course is to introduce the field of penitentiary sociology, which is not reflected in the context of Czech sociology. The prison world represents a part of the social space that is separated from the majority society by high walls and bares. Nevertheless, it is one of the key areas of social life, which has been attractive for not only social scientists for a long time. Hand in hand with the social and physical isolation of the prison environment is a series of myths and stereotypes that is connected with live behind bars. One of the important tasks of penitentiary sociology is to refute these stereotypes and unravel the mystery of the prison world.
During the course the students will be acquainted with the history of the field of penitentiary sociology, with main theoretical parts and methodological approaches.
