Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with key moments of chosen Francophone literature and to be aware of its specifics. The lectures present Belgian symbolism and surrealism, Quebec poetry after 1930 and Quebec novel in the period of Quiet revolution or philosophical approach to black African authors. A lot of time is dedicated to contemporary Belgian, Quebec and Maghreb authors. The texts of individual authors are analyzed in the seminars. Moreover, the reflection of Francophone identity is developed together with the differences of national literatures.

o Belgian literature: symbolism (Verhaeren, Maeterlinck, Rodenbach) and interwar drama; surrealism (Nougé, Plisnier, Dumont) and Henri Michaux; comics (from Uylenspiegela and logograms to Hergé and his followers); contemporary Belgian authors (Yourcenar, Toussaint, Bauchau, Mallet-Joris)
o Quebec literature: Quebec poetry (Saint-Denys Garneau, Miron); novels of Quiet revolution (Aquin, Beau, Bessette, Blais, Brossard,Ducharme, Ferron); novel after 1980 (Laferrire, Audet, Kokis, Tremblay, Poulin, Proulx); novel of 21st century (Mavrikakis, Dickner, Dupré, Farah, Arcan, Barcelo)
o African literature: negritude (Senghor, Césaire, Damas and followers); Maghred literature (Kateb, Boudjedra, Memmi, Chrabi, Mimouni); Maghreb rebels (Rachid O, Khadra), beurs (Charef, Madi) and false beurs (Smal); Tahar Ben Jelloun
