Course objectives:
|
The course is an introduction to two fields of social scientific inquiry: (1) "sociology of environment" and (2) "sociology and the environment". The first field of sociological inquiry analyses the relation between a society and its external environment. The second field, or approach, is interested in the process of the primary as well as secondary socialization, and in considering the social, cultural, biological and environmental factors that infleunce and shape it. The course is intended as an introduction to the exponents and authors of the sociological sub-field of environmental sociology. It focuses on key research projects and prepares the students for formulating their own research project.
Part of the course can take the form of the guided but individual work of the students. Guided study-hours will be dedicated to close readings of the required texts in full length. The texts will be subjected to collective discussions during class meetings.
