Course objectives:
|
Get students acquainted with basics of organic chemistry and effects influjencing their reactivity; to describe the most important natural/synthetic polymer systems. These materials will be described from the point of view of their structure - properties relationship.

Requirements on student
|
To participate actively in seminars, elaboration of the semestral project, passing the final test successfully. Final oral exam.

Content
|
Nomenclature of organic compounds, basic types. Basic structural effects and their influence on properties and behaviour of compounds. Monomers and synthetic polymers; propeties, processing and usage. Natural polymers. Composite and nanocomposite systems involving organic component; properties and applications. Organic compounds as a basic of synthetic nanomaterials with interesting properties.
Nomenclature principles, CAS database, basic types of organic compounds, examples
Aromatic systém - definition, influence on reactivity. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), their environmentalistics. Basic structural effect in organic compounds; influence on properties and compound behaviour.
Crude oil processing, production of monomers. Synthetic polymers, their production and properties. Role of catalysis in petrochemistry.
Natural polymers, their structure and properties. Case 1: natural and synthetic rubber, structure, in vivo and in vitro principle. Case 2: proteins, muscle and its mechanics, simulation in nanoscale.
Composites and nanocomposites with organic component; polymer - clay nanocomposites, priunciples of intercalationd and exfoliation. Organic- inorganic hybrides. Properties, applications.
Examples of other organic nanosystems with promising exploitation.

Ability to determine types of chemical bonds
To be oriented in basic principles of nomenclature of organic compounds and to be able to apply ¨it correctly
To be oriented in basic types of organic compounds
Ability of a complex view on chemical reaction from the point of view of kinetics, catalysis and thermodynamics
To characterize basic structures of organic molecules |
Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
To predict type of a chemical bond on basis of elektronegativity values
To name basic organic molecules on basis of their formulae correctly, and to create a correct formula back from the compound name
To interpret reaction kinetics and to estimate thermal character of reaction
To evaluate the thermodynamic course of reaction together with influence on reaction conditions
To describe ways of influencing the chemical reaction in sense of favoured products and isomers
To describe basic types of isomers of organic compounds |
