Course objectives:
|
To provide students with comprehensive overview of defects occurring, in particular, in metallic materials. The defects will be discussed both with respect to production technologies and with respect to techniques used for defect detection.

Content
|
Classification of structural materials according to their designation, properties and use. Potential for modification of microstructure and properties of structural materials by means of mechanical and surface processing. Classification of materials for cutting tools according to their designation, properties and use. Production of materials for cutting tools; mechanical and heat treatment. Surface treatment and processes. Testing of wear-resistant thin films. Special structural materials and their properties in machining. Relationship between mechanical, chemical and physical properties of materials and machinability. Progressive cutting materials, their applications and limitations.

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
Students should have a basic knowledge of chemistry (high school level) and basic knowledge of engineering, technology and properties of material. |
Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
Knowledge of basic machining methods and geometry of the corresponding cutting tools.
Knowledge of plastic deformation and strengthening and debonding mechanisms in metal alloys.
Knowledge of the measurement of mechanical properties of surfaces and basic knowledge of the study of the structures of metal alloys (metallography). |

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Upon completion of the subject, the students should have more profound knowledge of materials for cutting tools, their production and further treatment technologies used to improve their end-use properties. They should also acquire new knowledge of machined materials and relationships between their properties and machinability. |
