Course objectives:

The aim of the course is to prepare students for writing and completion of their master thesis in the field of public international law (PIL).
|
Requirements on student
|
Students will be evaluated for their activities continuously during the course and at the end of the course. During the semester, each student must elaborate in writing and then defend, firstly, his / her research question and basic procedure for its examination, and secondly, a basic outline of the work with a brief description of the individual chapters. Students will also be required to annotate one scientific article that has been published in a foreign language and is related to the topic of the thesis. At the end of the course the student submits a text in the range of approximately 10 SP, which is conceived as an extended abstract of the final thesis.

Content
|
Students will be acquainted with basic requirements for writing a master thesis. The first part of the course consists of lectures structured around three main topics: defining the research project (defining a problem, a research question, or a hypothesis); collecting information (identification of relevant sources, distinction between primary and secondary sources, specificities of sources in PIL); writing a thesis (academic style of writing, referencing). The second part is based on students' presentations of topics related to their master thesis and the discussion within the class.

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
Only students who have formally opted for a topic of their thesis in the area of PIL, pursuant to art. II(1) of the faculty dean's decree no. 44D/2017, are allowed to sing up for the course. Good command of English or French is also required, so that students are able to work with documents written in one of these languages. |

Students become acquainted with basic requirements for writing an academic legal text, taking into account the specificities of PIL. The course does not deprive students of the duty to regularly consult their work with a thesis supervisor. |
