Course objectives:
|
Introduce the students into most important periods of ceramics arts development from primeval ages to the 20th century; various types of ceramics in connection with the development of style in arts-and-crafts and in relation to others branches; refer to importants domestic and foreign centres of ceramic and porcelain manufactureand personalities of ceramic art.

Requirements on student
|
Credit requirements:
- Regular, at least 75% attendance at lectures, - Active participation in discussions based on homework on individual topics, - Developing written credit seminar work according to the specified topics, - Possibly, a special oral presentation of the work continuously during the semester, - Compliance with the final date for submission of seminar work or presenting a paper, - Participation in the field trip.
Requirements for passing the exam:
- Obtaining prior credit, - Oral exam in the range of topics discussed and basic study literature.

Contents of the lectures in course History of Ceramics
1. Introduction to the history of ceramics - typology, overview of technology, style periods of crafts and decorative arts, centers of development, role of outstanding personalities.
2. Ceramic production in prehistory and Antiquity.
3. Ceramic production in Renaissance.
4. Ceramic production of the Baroque period.
5. Origins and development of European porcelain production in the 18th century.
6. Stoneware of the 18th and 19th centuries.
7. Czech porcelain and stoneware at the end of the 18th and the 1st half of the 19th centuries.
8. Ceramics and porcelain in the second half of the 19th century - historicism, orientalism.
9. Ceramics and porcelain in Art Nouveau period.
10. Ceramics and pottery in the first half of the 20th century.
11. Ceramics and porcelain after 1950.
12. Field trip - visit to occasional exhibitions, museum collections and depositories, ceramic studios.
13. The history of ceramics from Antiquity to the 20th century - summary.

of important areas of development and centers of development of ceramic production (eg. Etruria, Greece, Tuscany, Rhineland, Delft, Meissen, Vallauris ...),
of major manufacturers in various stages of ceramic production (eg. della Robia, Wedgwood, Deck, Rosenthal ...),
of the characteristics of ceramics in various stylistic phases (Antiquity, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical ...), |

to chronologically locate ceramic products according to the material used and its processing,
to list artists in terms of style and technology development (eg, Palissy, Böttger, Solon, Seger ...),
to describe special groups of ceramic products in the history (eg, majolica istoriato, habana ceramics, English pottery, ceramics of Czech Cubism),
to illustrate, on exemples, the characteristics of ceramic production in various centers in Europe,
to comprehensively describe historical development of ceramics and porcelain production in the Czech lands,
to formulate, in their own words, their view of the development of ceramics in the 20th century and contemporary ceramics,
to monitor mutual influences between historical centers of ceramic production,
to analyze the shape of a pottery container from the aesthetic and functional points of view,
to identify detailed stylistic elements on specific examples from history,
to compare possibilities for ceramic design in relation to technological knowledge in the historical period,
