Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of graphic design from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to the present. A systematic review of students familiar with changing styles in relation to social, technological and political influences with regard to the commercial and noncommercial sector.

Requirements on student
|
Requirements for credit:
- Regular, at least 75% attendance at the class
- Active participation in the discussion of individual topics
- Presentation of a seminar paper on a given, previously consulted topic in the form of a report within the deadline set by the teacher
- Passing the credit test with at least 65%
Requirements for passing the exam:
- Previous obtaining of credit
- Oral examination within the scope of the topics discussed and the required study literature

1. Introduction to the subject. Graphic design from industrialization to nowadays: breakpoints. Industrial revolution vs. historicism.
3. Arts and Crafts. Art nouveau. Forms of graphics at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
4. Influence of free art styles on graphic design: expressionism, cubism, futurism, dada, surrealism.
5. De Stijl, Russian constructivism, Bauhaus, New typography.
6. Modernism in Czechoslovakia.
7. Ideology and propaganda in the first half of the 20th century.
8. Situation after the WWII: International typography school. Corporate style.
9. 60´s in the USA and in Europe.
10. Polish and Japanese poster. Grapus.
11. Situation after the WWII in Czechoslovakia; Czech film poster.
12. Postmodernism. Digital technologies.
13. Contemporary design and its aspects.

to provide basic knowledge of technical and technological procedures of graphics and graphic design,
to compare and analyze different artistic expressions by criteria of esthetics, semiotics and technique on basic level,
to specify basic knowledge of supporting arts disciplines,
to have basic knowledge about artistic and style canons of evolution of visual and applied art, |
Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
to work systematically on either seminar work or own learning,
to show interest in learning of theory of problematics usable in own practical work,
to use basic expresive means and options of graphic art and its different methods,
to work independently and activelly and flexibly react to evaluating commentary of the teacher, |
